The Intel Xeon Gold 6138 was a server/workstation processor with 20 cores, launched in July 2017. It is part of the Xeon Scalable lineup, using the Skylake-SP architecture with Socket LGA3647. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading the core-count is effectively doubled, to 40 threads. To further increase overall system performance, up to two Xeon Gold 6138 CPUs can work together in a multi-processor (SMP) configuration. Xeon Gold 6138 has 27.5 MB of L3 cache and operates at a base frequency of 2 GHz, with a maximum turbo frequency of 2.7 GHz depending on workload conditions. Intel is building the Xeon Gold 6138 on a 14 nm production process using a high transistor count for enhanced performance. With a TDP of 125 W, the Xeon Gold 6138 requires efficient cooling solutions for optimal operation. Intel's processor supports DDR4 memory with a six-channel interface, running at speeds up to 2666 MHz. ECC memory is fully supported, ensuring data integrity for mission-critical applications. For communication with other system components, Xeon Gold 6138 utilizes PCI-Express 3.0 connections. This processor does not include integrated graphics, so a discrete graphics card may be necessary. Hardware virtualization with VT-x and VT-d is available on the Xeon Gold 6138, significantly enhancing virtual machine performance and management capabilities. The processor also supports advanced instruction sets including AVX-512 for demanding computational workloads.
