A fla nge nut is a nut that has a wide fla nge at one end that acts as an integrated, non-spi nning washer. This serves to distribute the pressure of the nut over the part being secured, reducing the chance to the part and making it less likely to loosen as a result of an uneven fastening surface.
The fla nge may be serrated to pr ovide a locking actio n. The serratio ns are angled such that they keep the nut fr om r otating in the directio n that would loosen the nut. Because of the serratio ns, they cannot be used with a washer or on surfaces that cannot be scratched. The serratio ns help in avoiding vibratio n of nut and i ncrease the holding power of nut.
