The Intel Xeon Gold 6248 was a server/workstation processor with 20 cores, launched in April 2019. It is part of the Xeon Scalable lineup, using the Cascade Lake architecture with Socket LGA3647. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading the core-count is effectively doubled, to 40 threads. To further increase overall system performance, up to two Xeon Gold 6248 CPUs can work together in a multi-processor (SMP) configuration. Xeon Gold 6248 has 27.5 MB of L3 cache and operates at a base frequency of 2.5 GHz, with a maximum turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz depending on workload. Intel is making the Xeon Gold 6248 on a 14 nm production node. The multiplier is locked on Xeon Gold 6248, which limits its overclocking potential. With a TDP of 150 W, the Xeon Gold 6248 consumes significant power, so adequate cooling is required. Intel's processor supports DDR4 memory with a six-channel interface at speeds up to 2933 MHz. ECC memory is supported, which is crucial for mission-critical systems to prevent data corruption. For communication with other components in the system, Xeon Gold 6248 uses PCI-Express Gen 3 connections. This processor lacks integrated graphics, so a discrete graphics card may be needed. Hardware virtualization with Intel VT-x and VT-d is available on the Xeon Gold 6248, significantly improving virtual machine performance. The processor also supports advanced security features like Intel SGX and Intel AES-NI for enhanced data protection.
