The Intel Xeon Platinum 8163 was a high-end server/workstation processor with 24 cores, launched in July 2017. It is part of the Xeon Platinum lineup, using the Skylake-SP architecture with Socket LGA3647. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading the core-count is effectively doubled, to 48 threads. To further increase overall system performance, up to eight Xeon Platinum 8163 CPUs can work together in a multi-processor (SMP) configuration. Xeon Platinum 8163 has a generous 33 MB of L3 cache and operates at a base frequency of 2.4 GHz, with a maximum turbo frequency of 3.1 GHz depending on workload. Intel manufactured the Xeon Platinum 8163 on a 14 nm production node, featuring a significantly improved transistor density compared to previous generations. The multiplier is locked on Xeon Platinum 8163, which limits its overclocking potential. With a TDP of 165 W, the Xeon Platinum 8163 requires robust cooling solutions for optimal performance. Intel's processor supports DDR4 memory with a six-channel interface, running at speeds up to 2666 MHz. ECC memory is fully supported, which is crucial for mission-critical enterprise applications to ensure data integrity. For communication with other system components, Xeon Platinum 8163 uses PCI-Express 3.0 connections. This processor lacks integrated graphics, so a dedicated graphics card is required for display output. Advanced hardware virtualization features are available on the Xeon Platinum 8163, significantly enhancing virtual machine performance and management capabilities. The processor also includes support for Intel's Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX-512), providing substantial performance improvements for demanding computational workloads.
